The specificities of the genocide of the Tutsi

of the weapons of everyday life

Spear point

This tip of the lance represents only one example of the diversity of hunting weapons mobilized during the massacres. Arcs (imihet), arrows (imyambi), clubs (impiri), bells dogs (intozo) form the essential part of a hunting arsenal used to hunt (guhiga) victims perceived – and who live themselves – like game.
The killers also draw from the hunting register to describe their bloody expeditions and the Tutsi are referred to asabahigwaga', 'the hunted'. In some regions of the country, populations renowned for their hunting skills were recruited into the killings due to this specific knowledge.
It is undoubtedly in the mobilization of words and weapons of hunting that the process of animalization of victims appears in the most significant way.
