Nyamata is located in the district of Bugesera, 35 km from the capital of Kigali. During the genocide, many Tutsi took refuge in this Catholic church to protect themselves from marauding killers and locked the iron door with a padlock.
On 10 April 1994, however, nearly 10,000 people were killed in and around the church of Nyamata.
This church and its contents are a reminder of the horror that took place in the church and its surroundings during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
Both a cemetery, an exhibition site and a center for documentation and teaching on the history of genocide, this site is the only memorial in Kigali.
