The specificities of the genocide of the Tutsi

A tight mesh of massacres

Far from corresponding to a sudden explosion of anger, the massacres of the Tutsi are organized.
Essential link in the extermination process, the roadblocks – referred to as barriers – constitute a formidable spatial mesh in the grip of the Tutsi population.
From April 7, 1994, his barriers are mounted at all strategic crossroads, in all the neighborhoods of Kigali where the massacres begin. With the rise of massacres, the barriers are deployed throughout the country’s road network. Managed mainly by civilians, the barriers the most important, those placed at strategic crossroads, are taken care of by Hutu militiamen and directly supervised by the prefectural and communal authorities for the supply of ammunition. At the passing of the barriers, the identity cards featuring ethnic distinction [Hutu] [Tutsi] are controlled. The Tutsi are killed immediately on the spot.
