Chapter 4: Baptism

More than a denial of Judaism, which she has never practiced, Némirovsky’s baptism expresses a spiritual aspiration, but also the fear that her naturalization application will fail, even though the anti-Semitic threat is becoming clearer. Not very assiduous at mass, she apologizes for it here with humor.
