Chapter 4: Baptism

More than a denial of Judaism, which she has never practiced, the baptism of Irene Nemirovsky expresses a spiritual aspiration, but also the fear of seeing her request for naturalization fail, while the anti-Semitic threat becomes clear. Little assiduous at the mass, she apologizes for it here with humor.
