Chapter 4: Baptism

More than a denial of Judaism, which she had never practiced, Némirovsky’s baptism expresses a spiritual aspiration, but also the fear that her request for naturalization would fail, while the anti-Semitic threat is becoming clearer. Little assiduous at mass, she apologizes for it here with humor.
