Chapter 2: Status of the Jews

This first legislative text, promulgated by the Vichy government on October 18, 1940 but unveiled two weeks earlier, excludes Jews from a large number of positions in the public service, education, the press, of the show, but do not close the liberal professions to them yet. It nevertheless authorizes "the elimination of excess Jews". Foreign or stateless Jews are liable to internment in "special camps", at the discretion of the departmental prefects.
