Chapter 2: Status of the Jews

This first piece of legislation, promulgated by the Vichy government on 18 October 1940 but unveiled two weeks before, excludes Jews from a large number of positions in the civil service, education, the press, of entertainment, but does not yet close the liberal professions. It nevertheless authorizes the «elimination of the Jews in excess». Foreign or stateless Jews may be interned in “special camps” at the discretion of departmental prefects.
