Chapter 4: Travelers' Hotel
From May 1940 to November 1941, the Epstein family stayed at the Hôtel des Voyageurs on the road to Luzy. As in Suite française, the German soldiers are also settled there.
On 11 December, André Sabatier, demobilized from the Levant army, resumed contact with Irène Némirovsky who described his situation to him. Since last May, I have been taking refuge in this small village, in the most absolute discomfort, but where, at least, we are all gathered and find it easy to supply ourselves. But my husband, who was very sick, had to give up his job. [... ] As for me, I worked a lot. I indeed finished the Life of Chekhov. I wrote a novel, whose odyssey I will tell you about later. I started another one and made several new ones.”
