Chapter 4: Hotel for travelers

From May 1940 to November 1941, the Epstein family stayed at the Hôtel des Voyageurs on the road to Luzy. As in Suite française, the German soldiers are also installed there.

On 11 December, André Sabatier, demobilized from the Levant army, contacted Irène Némirovsky again, who described his situation to him. «Since last May I have been taking refuge in this small village, in the most absolute discomfort, but where, at least, we are all gathered and can easily find supplies. But my husband, who was very sick, had to give up his place. [...] As for me, I worked a lot. Indeed, I finished the Life of Chekhov. I wrote a novel, the odyssey of which I will tell you later. I started another one and made several short stories.”
