Chapter 4: A last word

Irène Némirovsky scribbled this note on her husband’s address as soon as she arrived at the camp of Pithiviers, in Loiret, on 15 July 1942. The day before she was deported, she wrote these last words: "My dear love, my adored little ones. I think we are leaving today. Courage and hope. You are in my heart, my beloved. May God help us all.”
