The Region is a recent community, created with the decentralization laws in 1982. The first regional elections were held in March 1986 by direct universal suffrage and have been held every 6 years.
Today, the Region intervenes in many fields: high schools, apprenticeship and vocational training, spatial planning, sustainable development, transport, planning, interventions in rural areas, economic development (aid for industry, craft industries, agriculture, tourism and foreign trade). It also intervenes in the fields of higher education and research, culture, sport, leisure, regional tourism.
The Region most often acts in partnership with the State, other local authorities, public bodies, the socio-professional world and associations...
As regards secondary schools, the powers of the Region are defined by the decentralization law of 22 July 1983. The Regional Council notably takes charge of the construction, renovation, equipment and smooth running of establishments. He can organize or support educational activities. All these investments are aimed at education, the success of high school students and their access to autonomy and citizenship. For school life, the actions of educational policies contribute to making high school students actors in their training and broadens their references (health education, road safety awareness, violence prevention, discovery of Europe and international institutions, duty to remember...). In partnership with the academies, the Region supports educational teams who act to propose innovative educational projects, but also to prevent school dropout and promote "success for all".
It is within the framework of these educational policies that the Region has been engaged since July 2000 in a partnership with the Shoah Memorial aimed at informing and raising awareness among high school students about the history of the Holocaust.
