Le Grenier de Sarah, a site for 8-12 year olds
Le grenier de Sarah is an introduction site to the history of the Shoah, designed for primary school children, and more specifically for 8-12 year olds. The child will find answers to questions he or she has about this period and the adult who can accompany him on the site will find an educational space.
VISIT SARAH’S ATTIC
Sarah’s attic was created specifically for children aged 8 to 12, respecting the sensitivity of young visitors. The editorial and iconographic choices of the site scrupulously reflect this desire not to shock them.
The site was designed based on children’s questions about this period, which has been included in the cycle 3 curriculum of National Education since 2002.
- Who were these people that the Nazis wanted to assassinate?
- In which countries did they live? What languages did they speak?
- What were the paths specific to each of them?
To answer it, three sections, "Once upon a time," "Words in my ear" and "Tell me your story," give keys to understanding.
How to use this site?
Le Grenier de Sarah allows children to navigate the site independently. However, adults are advised to accompany them during their first visit in order to establish a dialogue and answer any questions.
In the school or associative context, this program can also be consulted in a small group with the mediation of an adult.
What can we find in Sarah’s attic?
Three main topics are offered on the home page:
"Once upon a time": The stories gathered here give an overview of the culture of the Jews of Europe that Nazi Germany tried to erase at the same time as it was suppressing a human community.
From the home screen, a click on the books in the library gives access, randomly, to a tale. To choose another one, the visitor will click on the icon "another tale".
"Words to the ear": In this section, expressions in Hebrew, Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish and Judeo-Arabic open a window on the plurality of Judaism. By clicking on the phonograph, the child hears idioms from the traditional vocabulary of different communities.
"Tell me your story": nine routes bear witness to the daily life of the Jews during the war. By clicking on the photo album, the child chooses to hear one of life stories proposed.
Throughout each tour, definitions and documents are available to the young visitor.
An educational space for teachers and educators
The educational space in Sarah’s attic includes educational sheets offering different activities to be carried out in class. It also includes a publication area. This tool is integrated into the construction of a lesson on the history of the Shoah by exploiting the stories from the "Tell me your story" section.
Thanks to the efforts of Serge Klarsfeld, historian and president of the Jewish Sons and Daughters deported from France, united with those of the Shoah Memorial and the Ministry of National Education, teachers can access the list of 11,400 Jewish children deported from France between 1942 and 1944.
This list includes the names, first names, arrest address and deportation date of these children as well as photos or documents that could be found.
