Sarah’s Attic a site for 8-12 year olds
Sarah’s attic is an introductory site to the history of the Shoah, designed for primary school children, especially those aged 8-12. The child will find answers to questions he asks about this period and the adult who can accompany him on the site will find an educational space.
VISIT SARAH’S ATTIC
Sarah’s attic was created specifically for children aged 8 to 12, respecting the sensitivity of young visitors. The editorial and iconographic choices of the site reflect scrupulously this desire not to shock them.
The site was designed from children’s questions on this period included in the program of cycle 3 of National Education, since 2002.
- Who were these people that the Nazis wanted to kill?
- In which countries did they live? What languages did they speak?
- What were the specific paths of each?
To answer this question, three sections, “Once upon a time”, “Words in the ear” and “Tell me your story” provide clues.
How to use this site?
Sarah’s Attic allows children to navigate the site independently. However, adults are advised to accompany them on their first visit in order to establish a dialogue and answer any questions.
In school or community settings, this program can also be accessed in small groups with the mediation of an adult.
What do we find in Sarah’s attic?
Three main headings are proposed on the homepage:
Once upon a time: The stories gathered here provide an insight into the culture of the Jews of Europe which Nazi Germany tried to erase at the same time as it suppressed a human community.
From the home screen, a click on the books in the library gives access to a random tale. To select another one, the visitor will click on the “another story” icon.
“Words to the ear”: In this section, expressions in Hebrew, Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish and Judeo-Arabic open a window on the plurality of Judaism. By clicking on the phonograph, the child hears idioms from the traditional vocabulary of the different communities.
“Tell me your story”: nine stories tell the story of everyday life for Jews during the war. By clicking on the photo album, the child chooses to hear one of the Life stories proposed.
Throughout each route, definitions and documents are available to the young visitor.
An educational space for teachers and educators
Sarah’s Attic educational space includes educational sheets It offers a variety of activities to be done in class. It also includes a publication area. This tool is part of the construction of a lesson on the history of the Shoah by exploiting the stories in the section «Tell me your story».
Thanks to the efforts of Serge Klarsfeld, historian and president of the Fils et filles déportés juifs de France, together with those of the Mémorial de la Shoah and the Ministry of Education, teachers can access the list of the 11,400 Jewish children deported from France between 1942 and 1944.
