Beate and Serge Klarsfeld. The struggles of memory, 1968-1978

Booklet of the exhibition, by Olivier Lalieu, edition Mémorial de la Shoah (2018)

The decade 1968-1978 marks an important turning point in the evolution of the memory of the Shoah in Europe and throughout the world. The spectacular action of the couple formed by Beate and Serge Klarsfeld, carried out on several continents, plays a major role in this movement towards recognition. Their influence continues until today. Often, thanks to them, the view on Nazism and the genocide of the Jews in Germany and in France will be turned upside down. 50 years after the slap administered by Beate Klarsfeld in 1968 to the West German chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger and 40 years after the publication in 1978 by Serge Klarsfeld of the Memorial for the deportation of the Jews from France, the work of Beate and Serge Klarsfeld in favor of the victims of the Holocaust and historical knowledge, against the impunity of former officials of the Final Solution and against anti-Semitism, is here retraced. The context is one of profound cultural and political upheavals, while the cold war is not over. After the publication of their memoirs in 2015, the history and motivations of Beate and Serge Klarsfeld’s engagements are reconstituted thanks to numerous documents and unpublished objects, joining those of a whole generation of which they become the symbols.

Shoah and comic strip

Shoah bande dessinée catalogue expositionExhibition catalogue Shoah and comic strip, a co-edition Mémorial de la Shoah/Éditions Denoël Graphic 2017 (144 pages, 200 illustrations) –29,90€

On sale at the bookstore of the Shoah Memorial as well as on the online bookstore.

No historical event escapes fiction. With caution, sometimes with genius, the comic strip ventured, like literature and cinema, on the field of the Shoah. Everyone knows Art Spiegelman’s Maus. But beyond this masterpiece, how and since when did the graphic authors take up the subject? It is to these questions that the exhibition Shoah et bande dessinée proposed by the Mémorial de la Shoah in 2017 responds. This book echoes it, deepens the questioning and shows how the image at the service of memory has made the unspeakable horror of shadow pass into light.

Didier Pasamonik, publisher, journalist and exhibition curator, also directs the special BD issues of L'Express (last published: Gotlib). Joël Kotek, a Belgian political scientist and historian, is a professor at the Free University of Brussels and a lecturer at Sciences Po Paris. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the Holocaust and genocides.
