VISIT THE MEMORIAL WITH CHILDREN

The history of the Shoah can hurt, by certain statements or certain images, the sensitivity of the youngest. The Memorial offers children aged 8 to 12 a route through the permanent exhibition telling the story of the Jews in France during the Second World War, adapted to their level and sensitivity.

An accompanying booklet with questions that appeal to the children’s reasoning allows them to walk inside the museum while avoiding the most shocking images. Benchmarks guide them to the most suitable documents – photographs, sound testimonies, film excerpts... During and after the visit, parents or accompanying adults are invited to help children complete this booklet. The last page is devoted to a drawing, a text or a free reflection that can be displayed in an area of the Memorial reserved for this purpose.

Prepare a visit with children

The Memorial makes available to parents and educators different resources to prepare a visit of the places with children for whom the first contact, before entering the building to join the permanent exhibition, will be the Parvis with the bronze cylinder bearing the names of the Warsaw Ghetto and several camps and the Wall of the names of the Jews deported from France to these camps.

  • The description and meaning of these places can be presented to children before the visit by using the Memorial website (Link to the Places of remembrance page)
  • The "Attic of Sarah" can also be consulted with profit. This site of introduction to the history of the Shoah, was designed for primary school children, and more particularly for 8-12 years old, with respect for the sensitivity of young visitors.
  • Documents to download: The archival documents included in the website "Le Grenier de Sarah" can be downloaded to serve as a support for exchanges with children, before and after the visit of the Memorial.

The Shoah Memorial is a member of the Marais Culture + network and of the Réseau des Lieux de Mémoire de la Shoah in France.
