"It will always be necessary to defend the memory of the Shoah, and prevent its renewal in any form whatsoever by defending the values of a true political and social democracy and trying to extend it to the limits of our planet." (Beate and Serge Klarsfeld, Mémoires, Fayard-Flammarion, 2015 / Livre de Poche, 2016). The struggles led by Beate and Serge Klarsfeld on several continents for the recognition of the history of the Shoah, so that justice is done, are illustrated in the exhibition dedicated to them until next 29 April. It is with their exemplary commitment that we wanted to start this new year.
During the first quarter of 2018, we will be discussing the 80th anniversary of the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany. The expansionist policy of the Third Reich manifested itself throughout 1938 and led to the exile of thousands of anti-Nazis and Jews to countries, such as Switzerland or even the United States, which were going to close their borders in the following years. Two cycles of exceptional events at the Edmond J. Safra auditorium will take place in Austria, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the "Anschluss", and in Switzerland, which holds the presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance until March. A third cycle around the "Holocaust Remembrance Day" will be the occasion of the preview screening of the documentary The Four Sisters in the presence of director Claude Lanzmann. And before the end of the term, in March, there will be a new major exhibition dedicated to the famous photographer August Sander and his project Men of the 20th century, whose realization was guided by these words: «See, observe, think».
Finally, at the Drancy Shoah Memorial, you are now offered, one Sunday per month, an appointment around a publication or a historical theme. Don’t miss the reading of Georges Horan-Koiransky’s internee diary by comedian Michel Jonasz!
I wish you all a very beautiful year 2018!
Jacques Fredj,
Director of the Shoah Memorial
