How do images prepare for the time of Justice?

Christian Delage, historian and director: In this new edition of this book published in 2006, the historian and director, Christian Delage has added three new chapters including a chapter devoted to "images" on the massacres of Bucha (February 27 and March 31, 2022) in Ukraine. Images that "made it possible to immediately deconstruct Russian propaganda," he wrote in a Tribune published in Le Monde. And to recall "the importance of quickly documenting the abuses committed in the conflict in Ukraine with a view to future trials".
Which images can be considered as evidence?
Christian Delage, historian and director:
  • Those that are recontextualized, of which we know the author, the date, the place.
  • Those that are not distorted, cut, modified.
  • Those taken by people who can testify to the conditions under which the image was captured.
  • Those that can be supplemented by other documents to cross-reference, attest to their veracity. "A document is never enough on its own."
What is a "photograph that acts for history"?
Rafael Yaghobzadeh, photojournalist:
  • A photograph taken at a specific moment, on a date-symbol, marking in history.
  • A new photograph: which would not exist if the photographer had not been on site.
  • A photograph that informs, that speaks immediately to the one who looks at it.
