Online educational conferences

Thursday 19 November 202020vendredi 27 November 2020

The Hauts-de-Seine Department and the Shoah Memorial are offering two webinars for educational support professionals. After the tragic events that have occurred in recent weeks, these webinars have a special resonance today, and demonstrate the community’s commitment to promoting civic values, especially among young people.

Two educational conferences:

Thursday, November 19, 2020 – 10-11:30 AM

Sport as a mirror of society? A history that is proof against discrimination.

By Sophie Gagnard, mediator and Hubert Strouk, associate professor of history, assistant head of the educational department at the Shoah Memorial.

Competition and sport were regularly instrumentalized by political regimes, provoking resistance from civil societies. The intervention gives a large place to the destinies of athletes, their commitments to fight against all forms of discrimination and the media coverage of their fights.

This conference will be introduced by Jacques Fredj, Director of the Shoah Memorial and Nathalie Léandri, Vice-President of the Hauts-de-Seine Department in charge of school affairs and construction.

Friday, November 27 – 10-11:30 AM

Why talk about genocides?

By Iannis Roder, associate professor of history, trainer at the Shoah Memorial.

Studying genocides and mass crimes allows us to reflect on the processes that lead to these political extremes. In fact, these acts must be considered as political events, which allows us to question what makes them possible but also the passages to the act: how does one come to assassinate tens of thousands of people in cold blood? How does one become, as an individual, a mass murderer? Are we all likely to participate, in particular contexts, in this type of events? Is our society safe from such historical episodes?

In May 2019, the Hauts-de-Seine Department signed an agreement with the Shoah Memorial, aimed at deploying, particularly towards secondary school students and educational teams, actions to combat all forms of discrimination and meet the requirement for remembrance work.
