Online educational conferences

Thursday 19 November 2020Thursday 27 November 2020

The Department of Hauts-de-Seine and the Memorial de la Shoah, offer two webinars to educational professionals. Following the tragic events of recent weeks, these webinars have a special resonance today and demonstrate the community’s commitment to promoting civic values, particularly among young audiences.

Two pedagogical conferences:

Thursday, November 19, 2020 – 10:00-11:30

Sport, the mirror of society? A history that is tested against discrimination.

By Sophie Gagnard, mediator and Hubert Strouk, associate professor of history, deputy head of the pedagogical service at the Memorial de la Shoah.

Competition and sport were regularly instrumentalized by political regimes, attracting resistance from civil societies. The intervention gives a large place to the fates of athletes, their commitments to fight against all forms of discrimination and the media coverage of their fights.

This conference will be introduced by Jacques Fredj, Director of the Memorial de la Shoah and Nathalie Léandri, Vice-President of the Department of Hauts-de-Seine in charge of Business and school buildings.

Friday, November 27 – 10:00-11:30

Why talk about genocide?

By Iannis Roder, associate professor of history, trainer at the Holocaust Memorial.

Studying genocide and mass crimes allows us to reflect on the processes that lead to these political ends. In fact, these acts must be understood as political events, which allows us to ask ourselves what makes them possible but also about the acts: how do we end up killing tens of thousands of people in cold blood? How does one become, individually, a mass murderer? Are we all likely to participate, in particular contexts, in this type of event? Is our society immune to these kinds of historical episodes?

In May 2019, the Hauts-de-Seine Department signed an agreement with the Shoah Memorial to deploy, particularly for college students and educational teams, actions to combat discrimination and meet the need for memory work.
