The trial of Klaus Barbie. Lyon, 1987. Exhibition file
Delivered to the French justice on February 5, 1983, Klaus Barbie, the former chief of the Gestapo of Lyon, is judged by the cour d'assises of the Rhône, at Lyon, from May 11 to July 4, 1987. It is the first trial for crime against humanity in France. For the first time also, under a law desired by Robert Badinter, then keeper of the seals, a trial is filmed.
SEE THE EXHIBITION SITE
On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of this resounding event, the exhibition traces the proceedings of the trial of Klaus Barbie (37 trial days, 107 witnesses, 42 lawyers). The centerpiece of the accusation, the telegram sent by Klaus Barbie after the round-up of the 44 children of Izieu and preserved at the Shoah Memorial, will be presented in particular.
This exhibition brings together many unpublished documents, including those used by Serge and Beate Klarsfeld to track down Klaus Barbie, the investigations of the secret services, the interrogations of the accused, the notes of the president of the assize court. Large excerpts from the hearings and television news of the time report on the shock wave provoked in France and abroad and highlight the awakening of Jewish memory and resistance after the trial.
