The Auschwitz-Birkenau complex occupies a quite singular place in the history of the genocide of the Jews. It was there that the murder of Jews by Nazi Germany was carried out over the longest period, with the most advanced technical means and, in the end, the deadliest death toll: more than one million dead, including 865,000 Jews gassed upon the arrival of the convoys.
