Northern Italy, September 1943. An English and an American, escaped prisoners of war, are taken in by a village priest who helps refugees of all nationalities. They lead a convoy of men, women, children and old people to lead them through the mountains to the Swiss border. Released a few days after May 8, 1945, this film wins in 1946 a Golden Globe, one of the Grand Prix at the first Cannes Film Festival as well as the International Peace Prize.
