Northern Italy, September 1943. An English and an American, escaped prisoners of war, are taken in by a village priest who helps refugees of all nationalities. They lead a convoy of men, women, children and old people to lead them through the mountains to the Swiss border. Released a few days after 8 May 1945, this film won a Golden Globe in 1946, one of the Grands Prix at the first Cannes Film Festival and the International Peace Prize.
