3 May 1946, the International Military Tribunal for the Far East met for the first time. 11 judges, 400 witnesses, lawyers and prosecutors, lawmen will examine before the cameras of the whole world the guilt of 28 high Japanese leaders held responsible for the policy of conquest and terror conducted by their country over more than three decades. Like the Nuremberg trials, the Tokyo trial was meant to be a model of its kind. But after more than three years of investigations, hearings and pleadings, it ended in a real mess.
