The German photographer August Sander (1876-1964) spent part of his life in the Westerwald. This is where he made his famous portraits of local peasants in the twenties and early thirties. Sander’s photographs are now selling at high prices on the art market. The film begins with a sale at Sotheby’s in London. Very neat and elegant. Dark suits, white shirts... cut and return on a country road in the Westerwald. Simple old farmers and their wives dig in their drawers to find the prints of their portraits by August Sander when they were young. They all remember the photographer as a good man.
