June 1945. Seriously deformed, the singer Nelly Lenz, the only survivor of a family deported to Auschwitz, returns to Berlin. After receiving a facial reconstruction operation, Nelly goes in search of her husband.

When she finds him, he only sees a disturbing resemblance and suggests that she take the identity of his late wife to recover her family heritage. Nelly becomes her own double.
