'Minor art' and major questions

Since the 1960s, comic strips have gained significant recognition among institutions, whether museums or academies. It has however long been classified in the category of «bad genres», like science fiction and thriller. How did the comic strip pass from the status of 'popular' if not 'vulgar' literature to that of 9th art? Did she have to go through it so that the Holocaust could be addressed in her pages?
