"Minor art" and major issues

Since the 1960s, comics have gained significant recognition among institutions, both museums and academic. Yet it has long been classified in the category of "bad genres", like science fiction and thrillers. How did the comic strip pass from the status of "popular" if not "vulgar" literature to that of 9th art? Did she have to go through this so that the Holocaust could be addressed in her pages?
