Because it had the reputation of being a Jewish ghetto in the middle of Paris, the insalubrious "islet n°16" was the subject, from December 1941, of a vast urban development operation based on the legal anti-Semitism of Vichy.
In 1956, the Memorial of the unknown Jewish martyr, which became the Shoah Memorial in 2005, was inaugurated on the site of this "islet 16".
