Engineer student at the Ecole centrale de Lyon, Raphaël Esrail is involved in the resistance movement of the "6e", resulting from the EEIF. He is arrested in January 1944 in Lyon, imprisoned at the Montluc prison and transferred to Drancy. There he meets Liliane Badour who will become his wife.
Deported to Auschwitz by convoy No. 67, he is assigned to the Union Werke factory. In January 1945, he is taken to the "Death Marches", then transferred to the camp of Gross Rosen, finally, Dachau and the forced labor Kommando, the Waldlager. He was released on 1 May 1945 near Tutzing.
