An engineering student at the École centrale de Lyon, Raphaël Esrail is involved in the "6e" Resistance movement, resulting from the EEIF. He was arrested in January 1944 in Lyon, imprisoned at the Montluc prison and transferred to Drancy. There he met Liliane Badour who would become his wife.
Deported to Auschwitz by convoy no. 67, he was assigned to the Union Werke factory. In January 1945, he was taken to the "Death Marches", then transferred to the camp of Gross Rosen, finally Dachau and the forced labor Kommando, the Waldlager. He was released on 1 May 1945 near Tutzing.
