Charles Tremil was born on 2 March 1935 in Paris to parents of Russian and Polish origin. His life changed when his mother and two brothers were arrested during the Vel d'hiv roundup on 16 July 1942. His mother and one of his brothers, Jacques, will be deported without return. Charles was only 7 years old when his father placed him in the countryside and hid him on farms
At the Liberation, Charles returned to Paris accompanied by his father and began a career in textiles. He married Marilou Tremil with whom he had a son.
In 1992, after retirement, he joined the association of the Sons and Daughters of the Jews deported from France (FFDJD).
Charles is a member of the association Histoire et Mémoire and will even be its president from 2012. There he carried out searches in the archives and school registers to find traces of the deported children. His work has made it possible to affix commemorative plaques in several schools. He actively participated in the 2007 exhibition on children deported from France, held at the Paris City Hall.
He carried out numerous searches in the archives of the prefecture of police of Paris and obtained the agreement of Michel Gaudin, then prefect of police of Paris to expose in 2012 some documents considered sensitive on the roundup of Vel d'Hiv.
Passionate about photography, he covered memorial ceremonies for many years and thus helped to preserve traces of them.
Charles passed away on September 11, 2024.
The Shoah Memorial presents its most sincere thoughts and condolences to his wife, Marilou and her son.
