Charles Tremil was born on March 2, 1935 in Paris to parents of Russian and Polish origin. His life changes when his mother and two brothers are arrested during the Vel d'hiv roundup, on July 16, 1942. His mother and one of his brothers, Jacques, will be deported without return. Charles is only 7 years old when his father places him in the countryside and hides him on farms

At the Liberation, Charles returns to Paris accompanied by his father and begins a career in textiles. He marries Marilou Tremil with whom he has a son.

In 1992, upon retirement, he joined the association of the Sons and Daughters of the Deported Jews of France (FFDJD).

Charles is a member of the association Histoire et Mémoire and will even be its president from 2012. He conducts research in the archives and school records to find traces of the deported children. His work has led to the placing of commemorative plaques in several schools. He actively participates in the exhibition on children deported from France held at the Paris City Hall in 2007.

He conducted numerous searches in the archives of the Paris police prefecture and obtained the agreement of Michel Gaudin, then prefect of the Paris police, to exhibit in 2012 certain documents considered sensitive on the Vel d'Hiv roundup.

Passionate about photography, he covers memorial ceremonies for many years and thus contributes to preserving their traces.

Charles passed away on September 11, 2024.

The Shoah Memorial presents its most sincere thoughts and condolences to his wife, Marilou, and his son.
