With the House of Izieu
The inter-museums are offered as part of partnerships between the Shoah Memorial and various institutions. These courses allow students to better understand the chosen theme.

PATH: THE CONSTRUCTION OF MEMORY
Level: from 9th to 12th grade
"Mr. Klarsfeld (...) brings the children into the courtroom". These words by the journalist and writer Sorj Chalandon, present at the trial of Klaus Barbie in 1987, reveal the impact of the lawyer’s pleading. Facing their executioner, he chose to name and tell the story of each of the 44 children deported from the house of Izieu, none of whom returned. This inter-museum proposes to return to this work of memory, the fruit of a long work led by Serge and Beate Klarsfeld.
In the manner of this couple, students analyze archives to reconstruct the lives of children on the very places where they lived. Then, they are invited to discover the reasons and the different facets of the battles that the Klarsfeld have fought for the memory of the Shoah.

Workshop-visit: How is the history of the children of Izieu written?
After an investigation into archival documents and testimonies, the students divided into small groups map the journey of a child from Izieu and his family. The aim is to embody the diversity of the fate of European Jews before, during and after World War II.
This workshop can be adapted for high school students through the journeys of witnesses in the trial of Klaus Barbie.
Duration: 3 hours (including 1 hour of home visit or virtual tour)
Possibility of outside the walls.

Level: from 9th to 12th grade
Themes: History, memoirs, justice, microhistory, postwar Germany.
Historical periods: World War II, contemporary history.
Materials: Family and administrative archives, testimonies, video clips.
Activity in the room: Discovery and analysis of documents in small groups, then restitution.
Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes (including 1 hour and 15 minutes of visiting and starting up)
Duration: 2 half-days

DAILY LIFE UNDER OCCUPATION
Children’s journey
Level: from 9th to 12th grade
During World War II, 11,400 Jewish children were deported from France, while others survived in hiding.
Behind these figures are as many destinies that the Shoah Memorial and the House of Izieu have for mission to reconstitute. Two events symbolize their tragedy: the roundup of the Vel d'Hiv, the first major arrest that hit them massively, and the roundup of the House of Izieu, one of the last, which occurred a few months before the Liberation.
Through archives, photographs and excerpts from testimonies, students retrace the history of these children and explore how their memory is today preserved and transmitted.
