Around the works
«Knowing, from a very young age, that one is struck by some mysterious prohibition to exist forces one to ask daily questions that do not delay in becoming certain» (A destiny, 2016). The life and work of Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt create bridges between Germany and France, history and language, literature and testimony. For Marcel Cohen, it is important to "do with almost nothing".

1889. Jakob Ackermann and about twenty German soldiers land in South West Africa. Their mission is to create a settlement. They imagine themselves as builders, the standard of modernity. 2004. On the sidelines of a day commemorating the massacre of the Hereros, a young Namibian mixed-race man questions his past. One thinks of writing History, the other questions it. Their voices respond to each other. They tell the destiny of these men and this coveted, conquered, ravaged land, where the 20th century may have been born.

Since he was interned at the Pithiviers camp in May 1941, Zysman has written love letters to his wife Khayè almost every day. Some letters in French are censored, the others, written in Yiddish, go under the counter. These tight lines also tell about intimacy, fears, revolt and the harsh daily life in the camp. Brimming with life and love, this exceptional correspondence paints the portrait of a couple mistreated by history.

Musical reading
On the occasion of the publication of the book
Poets wrote in the Warsaw ghetto. Until the last moment. The texts of Wladyslaw Szlengel (1914-1943), "passed from hand to hand and from mouths to ears." At the end of 1942-beginning of 1943, in an effervescence, Szlengel gathers the poems and gives them to the clandestine archives of Emmanuel Ringelblum. He leaves us, he explains, "document poems" that he read to "people who still believed in their survival."

Prolific under the Third Reich, the German detective novel – Krimi – is increasingly the target of censorship, the regime seeking to impose the «good German detective novel». The detective novel then becomes an ideological battlefield invested by Jewish writers or resistance fighters. Today, the greatest authors of the genre choose to place their characters in this same historical context. Is it about challenging history or revisiting it through new approaches?

On the occasion of the publication of the collective work
Thirty survivors from France, the youngest of whom is 75 years old, gathered together and nine of them testify in this work. Most of the witnesses arrived after 1945 and their "interwoven" accounts relate mainly their journey in occupied France. This lively, pedagogical and accomplished collective work is read in one sitting and deserves to be reread as it teaches new knowledge about the relations between European Jews and the country of the Caudillos and the Juntes.

After the trilogy 'Les trois secrets d'Alexandra' (Rue du monde, 2004), Didier Daeninckx’s pen finds Pef’s brush to deliver us a new album 'Papa, pourquoi t'as voté Hitler' (Rue du monde, 2016). They evoke here the rise of Nazism in a Germany weakened by unemployment and populism. But how to tell such stories through images? How do these children’s albums become bridges between generations? In Long Summer Nights, by Aharon Appelfeld, Valérie Zenatti unveils the translation secrets of this travel story that tells the friendship between Janek, a young Jewish boy, and Papi Sergei, an old blind man, during the war. Scribbles and required chatter!

Born into a Polish Jewish family, Ruben Schwarzberg studied medicine in Berlin in the 1930s. Saved for the first time by the ambassador of Haiti in 1938, he later arrives in Port-au-Prince, after many adventures, thanks to a decree law of naturalization which authorizes consulates to issue safe conducts to Jews. He becomes there a renowned doctor, and the patriarch of three generations of Haitians. It was only in 2010, when Haiti was hit by an earthquake and the granddaughter of her late aunt Ruth ran among rescuers from around the world, that for a whole night, installed under the veranda of her house in the heights of the capital, the old man tells her his family story.
