Conferences, screening: attend the dedicated day around "The rescue of the Jews of Denmark"

Sunday, October 29, 2023 at 2:30 PM

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Jews of Denmark, the Memorial offers you an exceptional meeting in the auditorium, in the presence of a historian. s and a delegation from Denmark.

In September 1943, the Nazi occupation authorities planned the deportation of Danish Jews (who numbered about 7700 people). The arrests are scheduled during the night of 1 to 2 October, when the families are reunited for Rosh Hashanah. However, a few days before, some Danish politicians are informed by the German occupation authorities. These Danish political leaders inform the Jewish community about it. Rabbi Marcus Melchior can thus warn the Jewish community as part of the religious service on the morning of September 29. Nevertheless, two convoys leave for Theresienstadt on October 2. Faced with these raids, a pastoral letter is read in the pulpit on October 3 in all churches which denounces and condemns the persecutions against the Jewish populations.

The majority of Jews in Denmark manage to reach Sweden by their own means or with the help of acquaintances or people who have come to their aid. The route to Sweden is by sea, through the Strait of Oresund, from several fishing villages along the coast.

Individual initiatives, small groups spontaneously organized and resistance networks made it possible to save 7220 Danish Jews as part of the largest and most massive rescue operation in the territory occupied by Nazi Germany.

Among the guests at this conference will be members of the Royal Danish Court and the Danish Government.
