Conferences, screening: attend the dedicated day around "The rescue of the Jews in Denmark"

Sunday, October 29, 2023 at 2:30 p.m.

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Jews from Denmark, the Memorial offers you an exceptional meeting in the auditorium, in the presence of a historian. s and a delegation from Denmark.

In September 1943, the occupying Nazi authorities planned the deportation of Danish Jews (who numbered about 7,700). The arrests are scheduled for the night of 1 to 2 October, when the families are reunited for Rosh Hashanah. However, a few days before, some Danish political leaders were informed by the German occupation authorities. These Danish politicians inform the Jewish community. Rabbi Marcus Melchior was able to warn the Jewish community during the morning service on 29 September. Nevertheless, two convoys left for Theresienstadt on 2 October. In the face of these raids, a pastoral letter is read on the pulpit on October 3 in all churches which denounces and condemns the persecutions against the Jewish populations.

The majority of Danish Jews manage to reach Sweden by their own means or with the help of acquaintances or people who have come to their aid. The route to Sweden is by sea, through the Strait of Oresund, from several fishing villages along the coast.

Individual initiatives, spontaneously organized small groups and networks of resistance made it possible to save 7,220 Danish Jews in the context of the largest and most massive rescue operation in the territory occupied by Nazi Germany.

Among the guests at this conference will be members of the Royal Danish Court and the Danish Government.
