This act of vandalism occurs on the anniversary of the roundup of May 14, 1941 during which about 3,700 Jews from the Marais and the Paris region were arrested, transferred to the camps in the Loiret before being deported to the Auschwitz- Birkenau, in June and July 1942 to be murdered there.

A complaint has been filed, the police investigation is ongoing. In a climate of rising anti-Semitism, we are outraged by this cowardly and hateful act, regardless of the authors and the meaning of these tagged 'red hands'.

"Our institution is a place of education and historical knowledge" says Jacques Fredj, director of the Memorial. We act against intolerance and ignorance at a time of confusion and instrumentalization of the history of the Holocaust and genocides. Nothing will come to undermine our determination. On the contrary, this hateful act shows how much our action is more necessary than ever. We will not stop deploying and amplifying our educational and pedagogical work against barbarism, anti-Semitism and all forms of intolerance.

The Memorial would like to thank the many people who showed their support.
