Modestly, we hope to allow researchers to work on these topics and then also to enable students, young people, to take possession of its archival documents to carry out educational work.”
Jacques Fredj, director of the Shoah Memorial
The Shoah Memorial inaugurated the Raphael Lemkin Center on genocides in the presence of Jean Damascène Bizimana, Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement of Rwanda, and Philibert Gakwenzire, president of Ibuka Rwanda.
This inauguration marks a new stage for the Shoah Memorial, which opens its documentation to historians in order to encourage and promote research on the mechanisms and history of genocides.
The Raphael Lemkin Center brings together archives from the genocide of the Armenians, the Holocaust and the genocide of the Tutsis.
The president of EHESS, Romain Huret, recalled the importance of archives in understanding violence situations. This partnership aims to nurture "extraordinary" human adventures.
The historian Hélène Dumas, CNRS CESPRA, argued that the archives will help to draw up new historiographical outlines of the genocide.
