April 1998: at the end of a historic trial, lasting 6 months, Maurice Papon is sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the arrest of 1,600 Jews while he was secretary general of the prefecture of Gironde between 1942 and 1944. This trial at the assizes marked minds:
Because he is the first, and the only, of a Vichy official for complicity in crimes against humanity.
Because many witnesses were called to the stand.
Because it was necessary that justice be finally done.
At the time, Riss followed the entire trial for Charlie Hebdo, retracing the intensity of this historical moment through more than 400 cartoons. With his keen sense of observation, his constant focus on the victims and his incomparable talent, the illustrator allows us to see every moment of this unique judicial moment.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the trial, Riss and the Shoah Memorial propose to discover a selection of these drawings never exhibited.
