Nuit Blanche news

Saturday, June 07, 2025Ssunday, June 08, 2025

For this exceptional Nuit blanche, the Mémorial de la Shoah is pleased to revisit the work of Chantal Akerman, crossing several dimensions, notably biographical, of his polymorphic and innovative journey that has marked the history of contemporary art and cinema.

OPENING OF THE WHITE NIGHT

AUDITORIUM 19h-20h30

After a surprise musical opening, screening of the short film Family Business.

Family Business, UK, 1984, 18 minutes, with Aurore Clément, Chantal Akerman, Marilyn Watelet, Leslie Vandermeulen.
With the support of Cinematek and the Chantal Akerman Foundation.

Made while Akerman was in the United States to write the screenplay for Golden Eighties, this short film tells the filmmaker’s journey to Los Angeles in search of a rich uncle whom she has long lost touch with and who she hopes will be able to produce her films. With an almost Chaplinesque drollery, she evokes family ties, but also properly cinematographic questions, such as the making or financing of a film, acting and, as often in her work, absurdity.

Presentation of the evening and the exhibition in exchange with the public.

In the presence of the guests of the evening, among whom (subject to reservation) Sylviane Akerman (Fondation Chantal Akerman), Claire Atherton (editor of many films by Chantal Akerman), Sonia Wieder-Atherton (Composer, musician), Marylin Watelet (producer and actress in the film), Natacha Régnier (Tomorrow we move), Nathalie Richard (Golden Angels), Claire Wauthion (I, You, He, She...),

From 9 PM and throughout the evening, will follow on the stage of the forecourt of the Memorial, readings, musical interludes, replays of scenes from Chantal Akerman’s films, including those from Stories of America (evoking the Jewish diaspora in New York), highlighting the indescribable «Jewish humor», between self-derision and absurdity, by the guest artists.

With also Marine Goldwaser on klezmer clarinet.

Marine Goldwaser begins the stage in her father’s Yiddish theatre company, and receives a cultural heritage that has accompanied her throughout her artistic journey. Virtuoso of the clarinet, she is today one of the most prominent soloists on the klezmer scene.

CRYPT

A whole night with Chantal Akerman

At the crypt, visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the sound work Walking next to her shoelaces in an empty fridge, which resonates the voice of the director and discover in an exceptional way a notebook that belonged to Chantal Akerman’s grandmother, written in Polish, which is at the heart of his inspiration and work. On the mezzanine, a series of photographs taken from the film D'Est (1993) will evoke the faces and landscapes of Eastern Europe.

Exhibition from Saturday 7 to 29 June 2025.
