The Shoah Memorial conducted in Serbia from 20 to 22 February 2016 its first initial training action by offering students from Belgrade two days dedicated to the Holocaust and mass crimes in the Balkans.
As part of a partnership with the history department of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade (coordinator: Dubravka Stojanovic) the Memorial has proposed on an experimental basis, to Master’s and Bachelor’s students a two-day module devoted to the Holocaust and mass crimes in the Balkans, two subjects hitherto absent as such from the curriculum.
While the region is experiencing a surge of tension and the reduction of mass crimes now has a say in certain state spheres, the intervention of Croatian researchers (Goran Hutinec, Danièle Vojak) in Belgrade before a Serbian audience on topics as sensitive as the Jasenovac camp makes sense here.
In view of the feedback from the participants (60 students) on this first experience, the two partners have decided to continue their cooperation by integrating the next activity in 2016-2017 within the study program and thus giving rise to an academic validation.
