« Auschwitz-Birkenau as seen by Raymond Depardon: educational guided tour at the Shoah Memorial " news

On Thursday, September 25 and Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 6 PM to 8 PM, the educational teams of the Shoah Memorial invite schools of journalism, cinema, and photography to discover the exhibition "Auschwitz-Birkenau seen by Raymond Depardon"

On January 27, 1945, the Red Army discovers the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex, an area of more than 44 hectares where the Nazis murdered 1.1 million people, including one million Jews.

In 1979, the photographer and director Raymond Depardon went on site. He will remain more than two weeks: his multiple and fair gaze rests on what remains of the most implacable death machine developed by man.

Based on photographs taken at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944, this exchange invites reflection on photography as a mode of testimony, archive or propaganda. What does it mean to photograph the unspeakable? How does an image become iconic? And what does it allow us – or not – to see?

Visit of the exhibition by Sophie Nagiscarde, head of cultural activities at the Shoah Memorial and curator of the exhibition.

Guided tour followed by an exchange.
