In 1936, at the birth of his son, Robert Bernas bought an 8 mm Eumig camera in Vienna and began to film as an amateur. In 1938, it was the “Anschluss.”

Using images from the eponymous film, Vienna Before Night follows the story of Wolf Leib Fränkel, the author’s great-grandfather, who moves to this city on his return from Ellis Island and dies there in 1929 before "Nazi night" falls over Europe.
